Dear Angklungnites, keeper of the NJC Angklung,

How have you been? Its been ages since I read your post..in fact the latest post was indeed ages ago. Have no idea about the reason for the hiatus but it sure looks like its heading southwards. Whatever happen to the spirit and the determination that once you guys are so proud of? Whatever happen to the camaraderie that once solidfy the group?Whatever happen to the enthusiasm that once were the source of your beautiful music?

Is NJC going to be devoid of Angklung music? Hope that it is only a cycle and the wheel will turn to the better..but, do remember that, the wheel does not turn on its own. Many had come through and benefitted from the membership and many more had benefitted from the music that was played by the group.

Sure hope that the music of Angklung will continue to serenade NJC and quashed the hearsay that NJC Angklung is gonna bite the dust. Hope that the hearsay remains a hearsay...if it does become a reality, many hearts will be broken, I'm sure.

Withdrawal symptoms anyone?

Reminiscence II is over. Can you believe it? All the Wednesdays & Saturdays, the hot & stuffy times in TC36, the glaring & hot OHP which Mr Dzul didn't like which was then upgraded to the visualiser, chionging of homework during break, mass orders of bubble teas and grape juice and whatnots, times we practices up to 8 and people rushing for the side gate, practices till 9 where we'll have to order pizza, all the hard work we have to put in to carry the kulintangs and percussions and Mr Dzul's keyboards, the pub stunts, the rehearsals at Lt5.Wow, time just fly so fast. Anyway, I just wanna say how proud I am of every single one of you, because we've had practice for almost every single day for the past two weeks and its all your hard work and perseverance and teamwork and consistency and togetherness and .... love(: I felt that the ensemble has grown closer as we got nearer to the concert and I hope that this journey, though painful at times, have somehow taught us something or that we managed to gain something out of it. I'm like, damn sleepy and tired right now but I cannot put off writing here because I will just forget how I felt like if I were to type tomorrow morning.

Yesterday, I wanted to say something like this after practice, but knowing how um emotional I can get at times, I couldn't continue as I started to think what it would feel like without angklung practices. Which was why I just said those few lines after Haslinda said I had something to say because I was already starting to tear up haha. Even as I am typing this, my eyes start to linger with tears (HAHA is that even the right phrase?) As much as I feel that practice is tiring but it is also fun and the music we make is unique and the friends you make there: AWESOMENESS. So everyone, back to studying and homework and tutorials and SPAs and lecture tests and common tests haha! This is just probably me rambling but really, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE:D This is just a general thank you to everyone who have played a part in REMINISCENCE II. The individual thanks shall come later eh haha. To the helpers: PA, emcee, SMs, OAC, SH11. Just like that and its over! But it was one helluva show.
Kudos to all of you who hv put in so much effort...and i am honoured to be part of this. The whole process towards the concert has been tough and tiring...but its worth it. The experience is priceless, it will stay with u for the rest of ur life.

Reminiscence II is just 5 days away. This is probably the most challenging concert put up by the NJC angklung ensemble. Why did i say this? Well, the reason is pretty obvious. We hv lesser players this time around...and lesser player means everyone hv to double up like crazy..haha. But nothing is impossible, we will make it happen.
I can see that everyone is working very very hard for this concert. I am very proud with all the effort and the perseverance put up by each and everyone of you. Its been long and tiring practise every single day, persevere, push a little further for this last stretch and i promise it will be an unforgettable nite.
Like i say nothing is impossible..believe you can do it....it will be a blasting concert, i can sense it.

To all the seniors, thk u for ur undying support towards the ensemble..if u are coming for the concert (eh, wat am i talking abt, of course all of u are coming), hope to see and hear u that nite. Your juniors hv been working very hard for this, ur encouragement and presence is a great boost for them. And this would probably be the last time the sound of angklung be heard in NJC?? but...watever it is, the spirit lives forever in our heart.

Hey hey hey!

Let's give a round of applause to those who did the pub stunt today! :D It was a bit last minute and rushy but it was definitely a brave & good try! & hopefully, this will increase awareness of the concert and NJC Angklung Ensemble! We will do another one on Friday, where we will play the song and we will practice this on Wednesday hopefully. Anyway, a reminder to girls: bring your shoes tomorrow! & a reminder to everyone: Full dress on Wednesday! This week and next week will be tough but we can do this, YES WE CAN!

Come on everybody, this is the FINAL STRETCH for us! The last few practices before REMINISCENCE II (: Anyway, if you're wondering what the finalised poster looks like, its above! I think it looks very cute, with the disco ball and the many different colours hahah! I'll also start recording our medley so that I can upload it to the Angklung Gmail account for everyone to hear and listen before going to sleep or when on the bus. Costumes- check. Props- check. Now its just up to us to ensure the music we'll produce is gonna be BOOMZ:D We can do it people! JIAYOU!!

Ticket Sales Update

To date, I have received around 50 orders for the concert tickets via email. I hope I can take more orders, especially from those who indicated that they are attending the concert on Facebook.

I have also received 15 orders via Mr Keith Tan's efforts in collecting orders from the JH students.

All members please update Kaijun on the number of tickets sold. If you need more tickets, please inform Kaijun to collect from me.

The target is to sell 350 tickets and there are still many more available. I hope that you all will continue to advertise the concert to your friends!

Learnt two new songs this week, yay! We're well on our way to grasping more and more songs! :D Anyway, congratulations to those who came down and played I'm Yours and Don't Stop Believin' during the JH Arts Appreciation Programme. Even though we were a small bunch of people, but as long as we were able to entertain our audience, thats goood! You could tell that even the professional Gamelan players were swaying and enjoying our performance. That said, I believe we can do even better! I see the potential in uss! (: Let that performance be a first hand experience for us performing in front of a big audience, about 400/500 people, I think it was really a good idea and we have Mr Keith Tan and Mr Tan Chor Yean to thank for! Come on people, we can do this! :D

HEY HEY HEY!

This week was quite a relaxing one due to holidays and school events but starting from next week on, we WILL start our intensive practices! So now, it'll be on Wednesdays (4-7), Thursdays (5-7) and Saturdays (9-1).

Regarding the Arts Appreciation event with the JH students next Thursday, please reply Haslinda for those of you who need to be excused from lessons. We really encourage everyone to go so that we can really try to get the JH students interested in the CCA(: Ticket sales at the canteen for Reminiscence II will start soon so we'll be informing you guys of when you will need to be stationed at the booth in the canteen to help in ticket sales. More details about that later.

Meanwhile, I have edited the design of posters that received suggestions we have agreed on but I really don't know whether it is actually better:/ I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to post it up here so we'll show you on Wednesday. More updates soon(:

Please email angklungconcert2010@gmail.com to preorder your tickets. I hope to have a centralised ordering system so that I can keep track of all your orders.

Of course you can still contact present members to preorder for you but let's try to keep things as simple as possible this year.

Since the venue is LT5, I hope to see more seniors coming to give their juniors support.

Yesterday was Angklung Day Camp at Botanic Gardens which was aimed to bond our current batch. Unfortunately, not many were able to make it due to other commitments and also last-minute stuff/illnesses/unforeseen circumstances. However, many thanks to those who came! We really appreciate it! Especially to the seniors who also came down and participated in our activities(: We hope that we'll be able to keep up this AK spirit for years down the road. Hi all, the new angklungs have been delivered yesterday. However the supplier sent the wrong rack and so there are a few angklungs resting on the kulintangs.

As the new rack will only come in January, please do not mix up the new angklungs with the old ones.

The new angklungs are placed vertically on the kulintang to the right of the entrance of the angklung room.

This definitely shows their determination in reaching out and striving to do their best. I'm not sure if any of the seniors will read this, but if YOU are, we wish you all the best!

The reason for the postponement (did i spell this correctly?) is, i think all of u are aware.

Here are the confirmed performances in July:

4th July (Saturday): Joint Angklung Concert at RP in the afternoon. Timing to be confirmed.

18th July (Saturday): Cheng San Seletar CC (behing Ang Mo Kio MRT station) at around 5.30pm.

25th July (Saturday): Singapore Heritage Festival at Suntec City. Timing to be confirmed but it should be early afternoon.

Proposed attire for all 3 performances is black lycra top and sarong. Juniors please check with seniors where to get sarong. Lycra top can get from Giodarno. You have to buy it sooner or later so better buy now. Maybe one of the exco candidates can come forward to coordinate buying in bulk?

For the male members you can check with Illyas where to buy the shirt and pants.

I am truly proud with all of u, i was floating on stage! and i'm sure the audience were moved too, a delegate from UK was so mesmerised came to me and said it was a mind blowing performance, well done, u hv done the school proud

Hello everyone

The overall response for the AK t2009 survey was good

Thank you all for participating in the survey

Regarding the miscommunication in relay message, the survey was closed at 10pm today instead of 10 am

Please be assured that all votes were taken into consideration

The voting results are as follows,

We love/like the design- More than 60% of members love/ like the t shirt design

We want a back design- A majority of 69.4% voted for a back design

We want the shirt to be maroon in colour- Half the ensemble voted for maroon, followed closely by a tie between hot pink and lime green at 19.4%

We want the t shirt to be cotton- An overwhelming 83.3% of members prefer cotton to dri fit for the t shirt material

Hence, the finalised design will be the one in pink print on a maroon cotton t shirt with a back design

Confirmed price will be $12. All members are to bring the money this wednesday, 27/05/09. Seniors are to pay to Hai Ha, juniors to Jocelyn or Kaijun.

Hello everyone

We, beta exco group 3, would like to apologise for the short period of time available to complete the AK t2009 survey

We planned to have the survey up by Saturday

However, we only received the finalised design from the supplier, who initially agreed to send it to us on saturday afternoon 1pm, this afternoon at 3 pm

Finalised design refer to the design edited and approved by the supplier's in house designer. Thus the design you see here in the previous post will be what the supplier is going to print, and not what the supplier is able/ will try to print. We try our very best to show everyone the design closest, if not exactly similar to the design you will be seeing on your t shirts. However, the colour of the t shirt all of you see on the computer will be slightly different from the one you will be receiving. This was what the designer told us as the colour of the shirt, which was copied from their catalogue from the t shirts featured in a photograph, may be different from what we see in reality.

Because of this, we did not put the survey up earlier with the design we had (unapproved by the designer), as we wanted every one to place their votes after looking at the design the supplier is going to print for us.

We understand that due to a technical glitch on blogger, an incomplete post regarding the survey was posted earlier on Saturday night, resulting in several seniors taking the survey without viewing the finalised design. We were not allowed to choose the new time slot on Saturday, 10.45 am, as it was the only available slot left for us to meet the designer.We had to leave practice early as the office was more than an hour's journey from school. If we were to go to the supplier's office at a different time slot, we would be meeting the designer's assistant instead who would not make the final changes and confirm our design.

After viewing the new design of the t shirt, some of you may change your mind about the colour of shirt, type of shirt etc

Thus, to make the voting process the fairest one possible, we are carrying out the LAST and FINAL vote

We will go according to the majority, that is, the options with the highest number of votes wins

This will be the final design after taking everyone's feedback into consideration The design is more or less confirmed so there will be no further changes made to the front design (unless there are many violent objections to it)

Also, This is the best possible, feasible, printable, nicest head we can use for the guitarist as the original one is not feasible to print and would cause price of t shirt to increase

We will only make changes to the back design according to the voting results

P.S. we added almost everyone's comments, except for Bessy. If any of you remember, she wanted a logo (circular manner of "i love ak" in front, and the one we designed at the back, right? However, if we are going to do that, there will be extra charges. Thus, to keep it within the budget [less than $15] as stated in the first voting session, we did not consider the design anymore. Still, thank you Bessy for contributing

We are carrying out another voting for the type of t shirt as some of you may change your mind after viewing the new design

The two options are: cotton round neck t shirt or dri fit round neck t shirt

Note: According to the suppliers, for cotton round neck t, the area in which the design is printed on will NOT have the "furry" effect after many washes. However, area that is beyond the printed area WILL have the "furry" effect. So pls take this into consideration before making your choice.

The countless times we practiced cetok for both Carousel and Zafar, to the extent of suan-ning our dearest Qimin’s hands?

The warm up of crescendo(s) almost every practice?

The times where we look forward to breaks just so we can get biscuits?

Staying inside TC36 during breaks cause we do not have any dinner while the rest went to the other room to eat?

Browsing through everyone’s angel-mortal gifts and envying people who got big presents *cough* *Christabel* *cough* *Ferrero Rocher* *cough* and smiling secretly to yourself when you find your name on one of the huge pile of food?

The n times, where n=infinity Jocelyn Senior gave looooong debriefs? (No offence Jocelyn!)

The many encouragements given by Mr. Dzul during practices?

The time where we played Carousel and the-mysterious-man-with-a-guitar who supposedly walked 4 storeys up suddenly appear and compliment us for our playing?

Having a member (Weijie) who has birthday(s) almost every Angklung sessions? *stares at Jacob, Yilong and Kaiwei*

And the finale: The shock we had when we realized that Weijie (no offence!) could speak more than 6 words. In fact, he can speak A LOT.

I’m sure that there are still many many Angklung memories that I have not mentioned above. And I hope that 10 years down the road, this is what you will remember from being in NJC Angklung Ensemble, the fond memories we had together.

The end result is important. Like what hwei yee told me, ‘Of course the result is important. We care about it’. Undoubtedly, this is very true. Saying that I do not care about the result, is an absolute lie.

Getting bronze equals to having lost bragging rights for 2 whole years, losing the reputation that the seniors have built up, a possible decrease in membership next year, a less than perfect testimonial…

But so what?

As the saying goes, ‘Failure is the mother of success’. Bragging rights can be regained after 2 years. Yes, it’s a long wait, but it’s certainly not forever. Likewise, reputation can be built up all over again, and those who have heard us play will know that we’re still as good as last time. Membership next year not only depends on SYF results, but also the amount of effort the juniors put in next year during CCA Day. Last but not least, shame on you if you joined Angklung just because you want ‘SYF-Gold’ to be printed on your testimonial (Which I believe none of us are).

People have been asking me on the reason for getting bronze. Though my answer is always the standard ‘we tried our best. There’s a mismatch of style between our music and the judges’, I always feel this tinge of dissatisfaction. How can our ‘best’ be pegged only at Bronze standard? Surely our hard work is more than a Bronze. Mr. Dzul’s compositions (Labyrinth, Carousel, Zafar, Rasuk, Oasis, Hayat) are certainly much much more than Bronze. They are not something any award can measure. I have heard of this quote somewhere and would like to share it with all of you ‘Just because you deserve to win, does not necessarily mean that you will win’.

How very true. While we may feel unfair and unjust, we have got to acknowledge that the judges have their own reasons for giving us a Bronze. Their reasons might not be something we can accept, but it’s definitely something that we must respect.

So people! As cliché as it may sound to you, cheer up coz there’s something to look forward to! College Day and SISC. This is a great chance for us to show to the whole school that hey! We’re certainly not Bronze standard. J

To Mr Dzul: You’re the coolest conductor (truth to be told, I only come across you haha) I’ve ever met. I really really respect you for your passion towards music and how you stand true to your own style despite setbacks. There’s always something new to learn every Angklung session, which I would not have learnt had I stayed in the classroom and mug my days away. Like what you have said before, we are learning so much more stuff that cannot be taught in lectures/tutorials. Thank you J

To the ex-co: I’m not exactly the most co-operative member around since I’m always late (but hey! I contribute to Angklung fund k!). I’m also far from the best player, but I really thank you guys for the compromise you have made for me. (Letting me go Maldives trip, and yet join SYF etc)

To the seniors (J2): I may not be close to you, but I really want to thank you for making Angklung Ensemble such a great CCA to be in. Special mention to Shi Hong who created jokes after the release of SYF results to lighten the atmosphere. It’s really really appreciated. And the pretty drawings made by Kai Teng/Sherin before SYF. I look damn hot. Haha.

The following note was posted as a note on facebook by our dearest Hai Ha, dated, 22nd April, Wednesday and it moved me to tears that I just had to share it with everyone else:

I am not good at writing down what i thought but the feeling inside me is so powerful that i cannot contain. i dont know how long i will take to recover from this n i dont know what how am i supposed to do to be back to normal. the feeling of disappointment just empower me that i dont feel like talking to anyone or responding to any question. i love the songs n i love the instrument i play. back a month ago i thought i would not feel for the songs at all n i thought i would just play correctly without emotions. but what i felt on stage today was overwhelming; i played with my heart n i just couldnt describe the feeling that built up in me throughout the two songs. i felt the happiness inside me n i left the stage wishing that i could be on that stage again n continue playing because to me the feeling was just too precious to let go. i was scared of the results, yes i did because i have seen people who really put in hard work and did great but received nothing in return. i have seen it before n i never forget it. i was scared that it would happen to us. at that moment i felt it was stupid of me to think that way n i believed that i was just overly scared. i never thought that it would really happen. n i cried because all the five schools under my conductor got bronze and so all the compostions by him are went discredited. i cried because we played with our hearts n the judgers really just didnt feel it. hard work may not be repaid by rewards, it's rule of life, but something that comes out from the hearts n cannot be felt by others, it just makes me feel more disappointed than ever. when my conductor said the song zafar moved him during the performance, i was elated. nothing would make me feel happier than that. we have given the two songs their credit n so there is no regret. i just prayed that we got the award that we deserve so that we could return to school with smile on our faces n pride.

to my conductor: what i want to say is i love the songs no matter what. to be able to play the kolingtung n the two songs is a blessing for me who got no music background n talent. there is not a single moment that i regret going through all of this and being in angklung. the beats are inside me all the time, i can always feel it. to me, the songs are the best ever for syf n they really deserve gold with honours. i want to say million times thank u if i can because u give me the experience i have never thought i would be able to have- the experience of creating music that touch people's hearts. to me, opening my heart is a difficult thing to do so i treasure the moment on stage today n i feel great even though the disappointment is undeniable.

to my angklung friends: i am not good at consoling people, really i am not. i felt sad n i just couldnt find a word to encourage anyone. we are the best ensemble ever, that's what i feel. i make great friends here n i hv never regreted joining angklung. i hv never said this but joining angklung is one of the best things that ever happen to me here. if i ever leave this place the memories that are imprinted in my mind is the time in angklung. these words are from deep in my heart.

yep after all today is a great day!

SYF matters

Hello everyone...I bet by now each and every Angklungnites, present or past will be anxious about tomorrow. In fact, for those performing tomorrow, you will be looking forward to it as you've been putting tons of effort towards the 2 songs that you will be performing tomorrow.

I am proud of all of you. Even I am no longer in NJC, I am proud to tell everyone that I was once an NJC Angklungnite and still am till now and my friends will know that weherever I go, whomever I meet, I will always lookout for opportunities and open doors for NJC Anglung to perform.

Trust in your own abilities. Trust in your friend's abilities. Come tomorrow, everything that you've worked for will be materialise. I am confident that the audience and the judges will be swaying to the songs that you will be playing and tapping their feet to each beat of the gendang. You guys gonna be AWESOME!!!

Smile. Always remember that Angklung is ultra sensitive. It reacts to your mood and feelings so, FEEL for the music that you wil be playing and the SMILE will come. ENJOY every moment that you are playing the music and the smile will come and the audience will feel the music and the mood that you are trying to project.

SYF is not about competing against others. Its not even a competition. Its about pitting against your ownself. Always remember, at the end of the day, what counts is how you feel after the performance and the experience that you've gathered and most importantly, the camaraderie and friendship that you've forged. Many have posted encouraging words and have stated their confidence in your abilities. For the seniors that had attended the practices and heard the songs, I'm sure they will agree that NJC Angklungnites will stand proud once again.

To the NJC Angklung, Mr Tan Chor Yean, Ms Rahaa and Mr Dzul, Have a great SYF tomorrow and let the audience be awed once again with the songs that we play. Let them not blink when we play the staccato....let them be reminded that NJC Angklung is one damn good Angklung Ensemble!!!

According to the schedule, NJC Angklung will be on stage at 1324 on Wednesday 22nd April.

We should reach TRCC by 1300 to facilitate registration, tuning and last minute attire check.

Details like what time you will be excused from lessons and you will be leaving college will be announced tomorrow.

Do look out for announcements during practice and on this blog.

To seniors who can attend: Please SMS me as I have 2 instructor passes with me. These passes guarantee entry. Those who don't have instructor pass will have to join the public entry. Frankly speaking I don't even know how many seats they allocate for the public.

SYF is just a few days away, i'm sure everyone are all geared up to it. Just want to say that I AM VERY PROUD with ALL OF YOU!! Wednesday's combined rehearsal was awesome... repeat that again come this wed 22/4 plus pour all that feelings into the songs, and ten minutes later we will leave the stage with no regrets. That's all that matter..no regrets. Its an honour to be able to work with a bunch of dedicated and committed people like u.

Initially I had wanted to give each an individual copy of this, but because of excessive cost and a relatively broken pocket(oh dear! ): ), I decided to post it on the Angklung blog instead. (: I hope this encourages you (:

My dearest shakers,

I scold and reprimand not because I want to demoralise you guys but simply for the reason to bring out the best in you. I know the weather recently has been extremely unkind to us. The level of humidity is terrible! (sidetrack: The horrid weather is a bane to our lives, so we should really carry out conservation to prevent global warming from worsening). For the last few practices , everyone was restless, distracted and had beads of sweat accumulating at your temples which rolled down your sideburns to collect at your chins before dripping onto the floor. While you shook your angklung furiously, hit your rebana or kulingtan with your hands, you suddenly feel a sharp sting in your eye due to the salty water flowing down your foreheads and you miss that crucial queue from Mr Dzul as you blinked away the pain and all of a sudden you find yourself losing focus, tempo and rhythm.

I know it's hard, I know it's tiring but we've got to press on ensemble. We've got to press on. This is the period of time that Mr Dzul was talking about, where our greatest nemesis, lethargy and fatigue, poison our minds. Don't give in to that enemy! Fight back! I tell you to fight back! Remember what Mr Dzul told us, "It's all in the mind". Surely you have not forgotten what crucial teachings he has imparted to you.

Arnold Bennet once said this, "Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission".

YOU are in control of whether you choose lethargy to overcome you or to enclose your mind from this nemesis. YOU are the ones who will decide for yourselves how you want to approach each and every practice. YOU are the ones in control of what you want to think.

I am only but a person my dear shakers. I can only try to influence and persuade you guys to PRESS ON with what I say during every practice but the ultimate decision lies with YOU.

My previous conductor in secondary school used to quote Philip Dormer Stanhope who said this,
"A weak mind is like a microscope, which magnifies trifling things, but cannot receive great ones,"to remind us that by amplifying your own weariness you are magnifying trifle things that shows the characteristic of a weak mind. If we focus on such trifle things, how more are we even prepared to receive greater things in lives? Let's not be weak-minded people, let's be an ensemble that has developed resilient and unyielding minds that see the big picture and receive the greater things that life gives freely to us.

Take this as a training to build up strong minds for future challenges you may face which include the seniors studying for the coming A'levels and the juniors preparing for PW OP and Promotionals and even in our future working life. These fundamental teachings are crucial for us to thrive in the ever-competitive world.

We are left with 4-5 practices before the actual SYF judging. Make every single practice worthwhile for yourselves. I want everyone to take home something, learn something and benefit from every single session to the SYF. If you go home from every practice learning nothing at all, then I say, you've wasted your time.

I've said it before and I'm going to say it again:

It's not just for the gold with honours, people.
We are aiming to create music that teaches values to people, that causes people to reflect, to make an impact on each individual who hear our music. Music that touches the heart, music that enlightens, music that creates beautiful imageries for the mind, music that holds therapeutic value for the downcast and sick, music that opens the heart and mind, music that holds so much emotion that can MOVE people.

We are competing with ourselves, competing with the intrinsic and complicated nature of music itself, in the process battling with our emotions and our mind.

Stop and look deep into your heart and soul and let ALL that emotion burst like effervesence within you, out to your audience and finally to the world.

SHOUT IT OUT! LET IT OUT!

Last but not least, I want to let all of you know what great faith and belief that I hold for every single person. I know every person is capable of achieving more, all of you are created for a greater purpose, to achieve greater things in life, for all of you hold such limitless talent that never fail to surprise me. When you finally release that hidden talent in you, I bet you would be taken aback as well.

Surprise and mould yourselves, my dearest shakers. Make SYF 2009 an AWESOME one that becomes an indelible memory for you and I, especially for the seniors. For the juniors, learn all that you can and pass the legacy down.

When we walk onto the stage, know that you are going to give more than your 100% so that when you exit the stage, you leave with no regrets. The greatest misery is to regret. Don't let it happen to you.

Thk you Chor Yean for uploading the video and the syf 2007 songs. That was indeed an awesome display of sheer musicianship by the angklunites, and also the feel that were injected into the songs can be felt thruout the hall.
To the current members, this is wat i meant when i said that music with feel will generate an unseen force of energy. Thats the reason why i emphasised on feel. Stir the feeling of listeners with this energy,move them, communicate with them..u hv the power to touch everyone's heart with ur music. Music is the most powerful non-violent weapon since ancient time..people go to war to the beat of the drum, to give them that extra energy and fighting spirit..music is also the food of love..music is an unspoken universal language that can inspire the mind and touch the heart.
So people, be one with ur instrument, be one with ur songs..understand them, play with feel..put aside ur feeling of akwardness and shyness, express urself..be a true artist and i promise you, the songs that u play will jump out and reach into everyone's heart.
I hv told Jocelyn the story behind Carousel and Zafar...put urself in the songs and play with ur heart.
Last but not least thk u Fuad, for the speech and insight of NJC's angklung this morning..also to all seniors for the support. Once an angklunite will forever be an angklunite. I never regretted not even once since 2005 my time with NJC angklung.

When I was at RP today, I was reminded of that day at SCH in 2007. It seems as though SYF at SCH just happened yesterday.

Since it's time to be nostalgic, with Michell and Azhar digging up all those old photos, I shall, for the benefit of the present members, embed the SYF 2007 songs here. These recordings were made secretly on 26 April (if I'm not wrong), the actual day of central judging. The mp3s are on KM.

If u want to see the ensemble performing the syf pieces u can :
1) come to the rehearsal at RP on 27th Mar at 11am to 1pm OR
2) come to Broadrick Sec School hall on 15th Apr at 4pm OR
3) drop by to any of the prac sessions in school.

For no 1, only NJC ensemble will be there
For no 2, all other ensembles under me will be performing..its a pre syf mini performance which i organise to get them familiarise with stage setup and playing in front of audience.
Both days are closed-door event, open to invited guest only, if u want to attend to any or both days, do let me know.

Actual syf for angklung is on 22nd Apr at RP, NJ is second last school to play which is around 1pm.. i'm not sure whether its open to public or not...

Hello hello hello, doing my bit to keep this place from dying.
This goes to all current members, who hv been practising hard for the coming syf on 22th Apr. The progress so far has been good. I may not spend much time with u guys, but i hv faith in each and everyone of you, thats why i'm entrusting the ensemble with two original songs, you will be showcasing two songs that hv not been played and heard on angklung anywhere IN THE WORLD. Commitment, perserverance and working as one team will help you to achieve wat u desire. NJC angklung has always been close like a family...we may not hv a wide collection of super big strong instruments, but the closeness and cohesion compensate on that, i'm sure the seniors and super seniors will agree with me. The experience that u gain by being in the ensemble will forever be etched in your heart...again, the seniors will vouch for that.
Once an angklunite will always be an angklunite...thats why u can see some of your super seniors pop-in during your session..even Mr Fuad, the ex-teacher ic sacrifice his precious time to drop by and keep track on the progress. You hv all the support from ur teachers, seniors and instructor.
Getting the award is secondary, wats important is the experience and togetherness that u gain thru the processes leading towards syf, no amount of gold can replace that.
And i hv to warn u this, angklung is very infectious and addictive, u may end up spending more time with ur angklung mates than ur own classmates! (dun believe? ask ur seniors).
Last but not least..lets continue the legacy...stay together no matter wat and work towards a common goal.
Together we make it happen.

Congrats to all seniors who did well. To those who are disappointed, don't lose heart.

Practices will be intensifying soon. Keep the spirit up. I know the JC2s will have lots of consolidation and H3 lessons during this period of time.

For the SH1s, some of you may be running for council, so you may miss some practices.

For whatever reason you cannot make it for practices, please inform any exco member beforehand. There is no excuse not to know when practices are because the schedule is on KM.

To the seniors, the juniors will be joining us pretty soon, i guess, it all depends on how well u potray the ensemble as. As u all know this yr is the syf year, we'll need all the firepower to bring the house down...yes, the new syf song will be awesome, thats a promise. Wat u played for the past two sessions was only the tip of the iceberg....so far so good. The kulintang players may find the arrangement a bit challenging, but not to worry it'll get worst....errr i meant to say. it'll get easier as time goes.
Your grandseniors hv proved themselves with Wave Of Hope, your seniors with Reverie, now is your turn ...with Carousel.

Hi all, hope all of you are having a good rest during the December holidays. As you can see, one of us is having a week-long birthday celebration!!! I can imagine her celebrating her 21st birthday for a month!

Ok, back to serious stuff.

I have been getting queries about 2009 SYF and training matters. Perhaps I should step out of my holiday exile to answer some of these queries.

Query 1) Why are there no practices in December? Other CCAs have started practising for SYF, why not Angklung?

Answer) There are a few reasons why Angklung traditionally does not have practices after PW finishes in November, except for last year when there was a performance for Toastmasters. Firstly, I (and the previous teachers in charge) believe in giving our members a good break. This is to acknowledge the efforts that our members have put in throughout the year. Our foreign members can go home while the rest can spend time with their families and catching up on their hobbies. Secondly, December is the month where Mr Dzul composes his pieces for SYF, so let's give him a break too. Thirdly, unlike some other CCAs, we send our new members into "battle". Some of the new JC1 (now called Senior High 1 or SH1) members will be part of the SYF contingent on stage, so it is easier to synchronise practices with them if we start in January. Lastly, it is not how early we start practices or how often we practise that make the difference. The difference is how efficiently is time used during practices. And this depends on the level of commitment and concentration.

Query 2) When and where will SYF be held next year?

Answer) Officially, SYF for instrumental ensembles (Angklung, Guitar, Harmonica, Strings, Guzheng) will be from 20-23 April and 27-30 April. In the 2005, the angklung ensembles were judged first while in 2007, the order was reversed. In 2009, we may be the first instrumental ensemble to go for central judging.

The venue for SYF is the Republic Polytechnic, a newer venue than Singapore Cultural Hall.

Query 3) What do we have to perform during SYF?

Answer) Two pieces of different genres, not the same pieces from 2007, total duration cannot exceed 8 minutes. Maximum of 50 performers on stage (not including conductor). Maximum 10% of performers can be playing accompanying instruments (other instruments except angklung and kulintang).

Query 4) How intensive will the preparations be?

Answer) There will be an official rehearsal on 27 March (will be confirmed in January) at the Republic Polytechnic. There will also be practices in college. You can expect intensive practices everyday until 8 or 9pm a week before the official SYF judging day. If practices go well, there will be a one-day break before the official SYF judging day.

Please note that since there is an expected rehearsal on 27 March, you are expected to be confident in performing the SYF pieces by then.

Query 5) Will there be any other engagements in 2009?

Answer) Yes but not confirmed yet. Angklung is invited to perform at an ISSF concert at the Victoria Concert Hall on 20 May. This is a joint concert with some other CCA groups. More details will be available soon, hopefully.

We may be hosting an Indonesian angklung group, who may be coming over for the ISSF concert. They may also have a joint performance with us, depending on when they can come.

There will also likely be a performance at the Esplanade Concourse and hosting of foreign visitors.

Hello ppl!! The NJC ALUMNI ANGKLUNG ENSEMBLE is going to be officially set up!!! =))

Yes, i do know that there is some sort of alumni already but i was thinking tt i should make it more official and formal. Most importantly, we shall confirm the membership of the alumni and to ensure that the alumni is able to sustain over the years and gather all the njc angklungnites/fans of mr dzul together. =)

INFORMATION ON NJC ALUMNI ANGKLUNG ENSEMBLE

-Teachers involved: Mr Fuad, Mr Tan, Ms Raaha
- All graduated members of NJC Angklung Ensemble are invited to join
(not compulsory so don't feel forced to join if you really hate seeing bamboos lying around or hate hearing music you think is meant for pandas. but this is impossible i know.. so.. just join la!!! hahahaha)

-Objectives:
To gather music/angklung/mr dzul lovers and help sustain the passion and love
To create some sort of bond among different generations of NJC Angklungnites
*To help the juniors out for their performances/concert/SYF

Okay, to me, these three are the most important reasons that made me want to reorganise the alumni, and i think that the purpose of the alumni may hold differently for different ppl, but nevertheless, these three objectives shall keep us united and bonded no matter which batch we graduated from yeah?? =)

DON'T need come back for practices on cca days( wed and sat) hahaha. but if you want, you may. =)
DON'T need take part in ALL performances of the juniors. but if you want, you may =)
DON'T NEED to quit school/quit work just to attend ALL the alumni meetings or practices. It is understandable that everyone is quite busy with their own stuff yeah haha=)

BUT...

NEED to try your best to attend all alumni meetings or practices. if you don't want, you may end up in my "top hated people" list. hahahaha.

*btw, the first MISSION for the alumni is to help the juniors out for cca open house, main aim: recruit MORE MORE guys. haha. so i think i need the some guy seniors yeah =Pp

so long nvr post here, anw current members plse take note of the following

The above workshop will take place at Jurongville Sec School Hall on the 18th Nov 2008
Address : Jurong East Ave 1 (in between poly clinic and Pioneer Primary Sch, nearest MRT- Jurong East)
Plse be there by 9:30am
Attire : Half grey with angklung tee or school tee (plse standardise)
Wat to bring : writing material
Dismissal time : 4:30pm
$6 per pax, ic for the day plse collect and pass to the teacher in charge on that day. The $6 is for ur morining tea and lunch. Total pax from NJC :16 (incldg Ms Raaha)

I will not be around for this Sat's prac, so after ur prac plse segregate the angklungs that u are using in a box, i will come and collect them on Mon at 1230pm. Plse ensure that someone is there at the angklung room. Since no percussionists are available on that day, i understand Wani is free and available to lend a helping hand to the juniors....three cheers to Wani! So Wani, u may come at say 2:30pm.(no need to bring the rebana)

Pardon for gatecrashing into the blog....I thought I would like to pen down my thoughts on Open day.

This year's Open Day, unlike the previous yrs, is more impt as there will only be one intake in 2009. Therefore, recruitment starts now. Like all other recruitment, there will be a massive tussle for membership with other CCAs and incoming students are still undecisive on their CCAs and all. My advise is not to overpromise to the newbies. Please do not promise them an SYF slot or once a week training with total rest during June holiday and all as this will create unhappiness among members who join because of the promises made to them.

NJC Angklung is indeed blessed as we do not faced problems with members wanting to get out or resigned or felt cheated and all as the Angklungnites recruit by spreading the joy of playing angklung, the camaraderie formed, the chance to excel and the chance to be a part of a great family known as the NJC Angklung. Sometimes, hard selling doesn't work but most importantly, you must sell your CCA. Some may not heard of Angklung yet alone NJC Angklung, thus, thats where your role is paramount. Everyone must put in their very best in ensuring that the good word of NJC Angklung is being heard by every single newbies that walk into the gate of NJC. In NJC Angklung, everyone matters and everyone is a leader. Once an Angklungnite, always an angklungnite, thus this blog was written. Many great students had walked the path as an Angklungnites and be proud that you will be among those too.

For the JC 1s, I wish you all the best in the recruitment and your upcoming performance.And most importantly, in your PW OP thats coming up soon too.

For the JC 2s, I wish you strength as you faced one of the toughest years in your education life..trust me..maybe the seniors can vouch for this too, that, after the A levels, University is like a stroll in the park .

Preparations before Open Day

People involved in putting up of posters please report 1:30pm at angklung room:

(who cares about the 3pm rule)

Carrying of 3 desks and chairs from hall, the 4 representatives:
Kaimin, Elizabeth, Wan lin and Constance. [Set up by 4pm]

These people are to help set up the booths on Friday by 4pm, including the putting up of banners and etcetera stuff.

Open day (18th October, Saturday)- 9 am to 3 pm

Report to angklung room at 7:30am.
Set up of booth stuff by 8:30am.

Performance venue: Hall

Performance attire:
Girls-Sarong, black shirt, same black/white shoes.
Guys- White long shirt, black pants, same shoes.

Performance slot 1: 10:30-10:45 am
To be backstage by 10:20 am sharp.

Heyzzzzz angklunites! Here are five pics from the farewell on 30th July that I’ve just received…still carn upload the ones taken at esplanade though. I think the blog hates my pics and loves shiying’s and anw, the ones taken by my cam are a bit de blur…ITS THE LIGHTING KAES!!! NOT MY SKILL! It worked perfectly for mi todae…the vids are coming SOON (tentatively) :P others holding on to photos pls post them up!!

On a side note, ytd i’ve given all the current exco members admin permissions so you gurls can go ahead and revamp the whole blog and give it a new lease of LIFE!!! =D

Somehow, seeing the juniors perform last nite made me feel seriously old. And the fact that we've already stepped down started to sink in. Farewell that day still felt so...not over. Now it seems like we're really graduating. Dunno how to phrase it well, i'm not good in GP like mich or joce so pardon me. Ohmien im at a loss of words now…

time flies…it seemed not too long ago that I shared the stage at the concourse with my fellow j2s for the FIRST time WITHOUT any seniors with us at all, and we saw the nice nice toilets + nice nice make up mirrors :P

all the wonderful memories are starting to flood into my dendrites (mr dzul, issit liddat? erps, two years w/o bio le =.=) and well, I’ve enjoyed being able to perform with the current j3s, j2s and j1s for these two years – the fooling around, taking of pics, fear that we do not perform to expectations when we actually did (suntec city 2007), the tribal thingy where we play while marching/hopping in circles? (oh!!! We haven tried it this yr with the j1s b4 eh?? Haha nvm, next yr rmb to implement it agn k mr dzul! Its fun!! =)))))) and yeah the word angklung is etched in my brain now and ill nvr forget how to spell it agn…=.= exco0607 shld noe wad im toking abt. U guys “traumatized” mi so much..

to the j1s must learn to appreciate every session cuz u may not think so, but ull start missing the CCA once u graduate from it. Its the late, tired nights that bonded us so last year during the syf period so for SYF 2009 dun comprain k! it’ll be worth it when u stand on that huge stage in spore conference hall and play for ur life and hearing compliments from other schools about ur performance and finally, hearing the announcement of the results, hands held tightly with ur friends together, heads down in prayer and in the end no matter the results, cheer so loudly for angklung that ur voices become hoarse.

its super rdm and disorganized la this post, but yeah I wanna thank the teachers, mr dzul, and all the members for the wonderful experience during the whole period of preparation for Reminiscence. I’ve learnt a lot abt many other things thru this although I believe that theres always room for improvement and more to learn. Once agn, sry ah mrtan made u miss ur dinner that nite…and thanks agn to the guys for carrying all the instruments for all the external performances! U guys are MOCHA(not macho)! >.<

to the exco members, ive learnt and grown a lot with u bunch too. nth to do with the gossips and the scandals that we share whenever we have a meeting (oops! Haha jkjk no la, we really got do stuff one k…) jialing the one who no sense of direction like mi, carline who is super auntie, amy who provides most of the gossip :O , joycelyn who’s as crazy abt food as c-r---e is abt _______, xinyu the auto-auntie(zi4 dong4 sao3) who’s my partner in crime(yeah yeah blame us if u dun like ur note =.= we wun change it for u na na ni poo poo =P), michell the super long debriefer + blogger haiz so long-winded hahaz…we’re unique in our own ways but we’ve come together and worked as a team. Even if there were disagreements, we alwaes settle it peacefully and im happy that I love u, u love mi, we are happy family!!! its a shame that we could not work together longer to really do more for the cca but keep in touch!!

To mrdzul, I noe ure v. tired running ard teaching so many schools angklung. and even choirs??!! *raises eyebrows* Haha spreading the love of MUSIC eh? But hang in there! Syf coming back, really nid to squeeze ur brains for that particular creative juice and then start triggering next yrs STARS’ dendrites every practice!!! Nid help to squeeze ask us kae..or ask the MOCHA guys to do it for u…

Ok I better stop b4 I become the next michell haha…in short, I’ve enjoyed every single moment with the whole cca and yeah it has really SHAKEN up my life in NJC!

The esplanade performance was totally awesome!! I cant describe in words how happy and delighted and super high i am. These overwhelming feelings are attributed to two main factors. Firstly, to see all the juniors worked so hard for this performance, with only a month to learn and perfecting all the songs, u hv shown the qualities of every NJ angklunites have....determination, dedication and always strive for the best. The teamwork and effort that you've shown are commendable, you have made me the teachers and ur seniors very proud, very very proud. Your hard work has paid off....every single one of you has gained a very priceless experience and satisfaction that u will carry for the rest of your life apart from growing millions n million of dendrites (aiyar the one that i told that will grow everytime u do new things). Keep up the good work, stay together and be proud of your ensemble even after u leave NJ, just like wat ur seniors hv demonstrated. Tonite u nailed it! Awesome!....once again well done!
Secondly, i'm overwhelmingly happy when i saw the seniors from all the batches since the first year i took over as instructor, all right there giving support to NJ angklung...batch of 2005 right up to 2008! U may not notice, seriously i'm close to tearing (got such werd meh?) when i see al of you there, ur loyalty and support is beyond words...thank you my dear seniors, thank you for the flower and the notes, thank you for your presence...(aiyar, suddenly miss u all)....

Reminscence DVD

PS: Sad to say, there are some people in college who do not understand the difference between "noise", "sound" and "music". As a group of intelligent people, we must be forgiving ok? Rejoice that you have the gift of appreciating music and be understanding to those who don't have it.

The rehearsals today were....

Alright, let's forget about all the upsetting, unhappy and humiliating things that makes bile creep up our throat and cause us to all feel like retching out our dinner. Let's all just forget about it okay? Don't get affected by whatever they said my dear J1s. Forget about today. It's not worth our effort recalling. It's a waste of our precious memory space. Our brains are needed to contain other even more important memories.

I feel so useless you know?

How I'm unable to defend and stand up for this whole ensemble.

How I actually even overlooked a welfare of one particular member.

How I was unable to shield them from humiliation.

It hurts so much that such a united and great bunch of people are facing such idiocy in the college.

You have no idea how I felt when THAT teacher said that. I felt like punching her in the face. Don't worry, I won't be dedicating a whole flaming post to that teahcer. I won't want to run into any defamatory law suit. I'm still sane. I'm still coherent.

I want that person to apologise, for saying that to the bunch of people whom have made my life in nj so worthwhile and enjoyable; for saying all that to the special group of people with such uncanny wit and indisputable high intellectual ability. THAT person, has no idea how much this group of people have slogged and practiced for this performance. THEY have NO idea how important this is to us. THEY have NO idea, absolutely NO idea how much effort this group of people has put in, how serious they have been during every practice; how they would laugh it off even when they felt lethargic and tired; how they would say they're alright when it actually totally sucked.

THAT person has NO right to tell us anything. No right at all.

They have NO right to say that the music we play is noise. It's not noise, it's MUSIC- MUSIC damn it. Music that brings our hairs standing on ends! Do you have something wrong with your ears? I hope you would go to the doctor to get those ear drums cleaned up.

I'm so, so apologetic. I'm so sorry for everything ensemble. Everything you guys have faced today.

When we went to the porch to practice and did swaying movements for the very first time, you have no idea how 'high' I felt. I was just running on adrenaline. I felt like everything was so right- how we're all just here together, for each other, side by side, in the dark of the night, making music with our instruments and just swaying in tandem with the leaves rustling in the wind, without a care of the world.

I just want to say how proud I am of all of you. That no matter what others say, I'll always be proud of all of you. That we'll always be there for each other. (:

ENSEMBLE! Let's hold our heads high and strut down that runway with confidence and assertion on the 8th of August. Let's shake with all our might, emotion,mettle and strength and make Singapore proud. Let's show them what we're made of and what we're all about!

Schedule for 8th of August

There are major changes with regards to the 8th of August schedule. Please refer to the changes below.

1) Everyone to report to the Angklung room in the morning, 7:30am to have a last run through and warm up before our nj ndp performance at TA32. Please do not be late. We will be practicing from 7:30am to 7:50am.
2) 7:50am we will be bringing our instruments down. Angklungs and drums to be brought along to our resting room at LT 1. Place to put kulingtans before the performance is to be confirmed.
3) We will be setting up our instruments on the platform during 8:20 to 8:25(5 mins) when the school is singing the national songs.
4) 8:25am to 8:30am will be our performance.
5) After which we will be bringing all our instruments back to a TA room on the 1st floor.(tentative to changes) We can take our time for this one, since we have time from 8:30am all the way to 9:45am.
6) 9:50am will be the grand finale where we must all gather and sing the national song- whatever that is.
7) The program for the nj ndp will end perhaps around 10am to 11am.

That's it for our first half of the day.

Now I shall proceed to the second half.

1) From 11am to 2pm, we will be doing a run through at the TA room on the 1st floor where we have left our instruments, before our esplanade concert performance.
2) A break from 2pm to 2:30pm will be given.
3) After which, a Final practice will be carried out from 2:30pm to 3pm.
4) The lorry will come at 3pm, All members will help in loading the instruments. The four people who are bringing the instruments to the esplanade are as follows: Jiamin,Hwei Yee, Zeni and Ilyas with Mr Tan too. The lorry will reach the Esplanade at around 4pm -4:30pm. Instruments will be placed in Esplanade's storage room. These four members and Mr Tan(if he wants) will have their dinner orders taken.
5) The rest of the members will have to leave right after loading the instruments onto the lorry to MARINA FOOD CENTER to have dinner. Bus 171 from our school goes to the Esplanade. EVERYONE IS TO EAT QUICKLY. We shall give the journey from school to Marina food center around 1 hour. So we will reach there around 4:15pm perhaps. So technically, we have only about half an hour to 40 minutes to eat.
6) After dinner, we will have to reach the loading bay by 5:10pm(the same one for reminiscence concert) to get our passes.
7) From 5:15pm to 5:40pm, everyone is to get changed into their attires.
8) 5:45pm to 6pm will be the sound check.
9) From 6pm to 7pm we can put our make up and cam whore if you wish (:
10) 7pm we shall set up our instruments.
11) 7:15pm to 7:45pm is our first slot for performance!
12) Next slot will be at 8:15pm to 8:45pm.
13) After performance, all members to bring instruments to Esplanade storage.

To all the JC 2s Angklungnites...I hope that the past year and a half has been great for each and everyone of you. I apologize for not being able to attend the farewell. In fact, Ive informed mr Dzul that I will be attending but, the demand of work at the HQ forbids me from attending the ceremony.

First and foremost, time sure move super duper fast. Like I've mention last year and since 1999 when I took over Angklung, EVERY ANGKLUNG MEMBER MATTERS AND EVERY ANGKLUNG MEMBER IS A LEADER. It is the members that make the CCA and not the other way round. The batch of 2007/2008, you have indeed bring NJC Angklung to another level. you have shown that combination of dedication, hardwork and passion and teamwork will indeed bring success. All of you had shown that NJC Angklungis not about an individual and not about sheer glam etc. Its about being passionate about what you believe in and about the friendship taht you've made with the rest of the Angklungnites be it juniors, seniors or super seniors. College is not just about the A's and the Distinctions...it is more than just that. It is about growing up and discovering one self, building relationships, building resilience and most imprtantly, loving every moment of the JC life as these are the things that you will remember as you look back to the time when you are 17 or 18 years old.

Even though I've left NJC, it is indeed difficult to part and let the day past without me assessing the NJC ANgklung Blog...just to listen to the sound of the angklung played by all of you. It is an addiction...definitely a welcome addiction. Thank you Angklungnites of 2007/2008 for all your beautiful music that you've played.

Lastly, best of luck on your future endeavour and I'm sure all of you will clear through the A level with ease and achiieve what you are most deserving of. Thank you once again and do keep in touch..or at least drop a note in the blog.

Thank you for all the effort that you guys out into our farewell. It was a really great one. Continue with all your hard work during CCA practices and put your best fot forward for each performance. Practice makes perfect so do endure the extra CCA practices that you may have in the future. Last but not least, enjoy your time in Angklung.

To all the Seniors:
Thank you all as well for putting your time and energy into the CCA over the two years. We have all grown to know each other better and had fun times in Angklung. I hope that in the future when we think back of our JC years, we will all remember the good times spent in Angklung. All the best for the coming A levels.

To Mr Dzul, Mr Tan, Mr Fuad, Ms Rahaa:
Thank you for dedication to angklung and for making Angklung such an enjoyable CCA. Thx for supporting us and encouraging us. All the pep talks, encouragements etc before and after performances do have an impact on us( i mean a positive one of course) Thank you.

Short note to Haslina and Jia Min:
Hey! Thank you for your present and the tomato :) I'll never look at a tomato in the same light again. Keep the "2 normal spirit" burning alive! (even if you ( haslina) are no longer playing 2 normal) haha
